Heart’s Ann Wilson, who with sister Nancy Wilson re-ignited “Heart Mania” this summer with the release of Alive In Seattle, their critically acclaimed DVD (Image Entertainment) and Super Audio CD (Epic Legacy) will perform “Almost Paradise” with Kenny Loggins at a taping of LIFETIME Television’s fourth annual concert to champion the fight against breast cancer Women Rock! Songs From The Movies on Tuesday, September 30th at Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The concert special will air Thursday, October 23rd on the LIFETIME Television Network. Wilson joins performers such as Celine Dion, Dolly Parton, Bonnie Raitt and Mya.

“I’m always willing to do what I can to raise awareness for this important battle that we women face everyday,” says Wilson.

Next up, HEART is bringing their songs home again and to VH1 as they perform a unique concert, that will air October 14th, 8 pm ET/P. “Experience Presented by Sony Ericsson” is 60 minutes of pure rock and roll. The program is a five-part behind-the-scenes look at music’s top artists as they perform in Seattle at the Sky Church, located inside the renowned Experience Music Project. HEART, Ann and Nancy Wilson’s rock supergroup is a Seattle-based band that stays true to their roots. They filmed and recorded Alive in Seattle, their recently released DVD (Image Entertainment) and Super Audio CD (Epic Legacy) at Seattle’s Paramount Theater, and earlier this summer kicked off their “Alive in America” summer tour at the area’s newly built White River Amphitheater. Now HEART is bringing their mega hits home again as they perform a unique concert, on September 5th from the Sky Church at the Experience Music Project that will be taped for a new VH1 television concert series. Although the EMP performance has just been announced as sold out, the broadcast dates for the VH1 five-part series will air weekly beginning September 16 at 8 pm.

Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson had the chance to pinch hit for Elton John at the recent “Brian Wilson And Friends” benefit concert and celebration for The Carl Wilson Foundation, Thursday, October 16th, at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Along with musical guests Brian Wilson and Sugar Ray, the duo performed such Heart classics as “Dog and Butterfly,” and “Alone” as well as a Harry Neilson tune “Lifeline.” Ann and Nancy also performed the Beach Boys tune “Until I Die.”

“Early in our career, we had the chance to open for The Beach Boys, plus we’re big fans of their music so Ann and I were very honored to be asked to take part in this worthy event,” said Nancy Wilson.

The Carl Wilson Foundation was established in 1999 by Jonah and Justyn Wilson to honor their father, Carl Dean Wilson. Despite his valiant efforts, he succumbed to cancer in 1998. The aim and primary focus of The Carl Wilson Foundation is to help raise funds for cancer research and to air musicians in need of support.

Hahn proclaimed Sunday, August 3, 2003 as “HEART Day in the City of Los Angeles.” Also on August 3rd Ann and Nancy Wilson brought their rock supergroup HEART to the Greek Theatre and packed the rockin’ venue. Musician/actor Billy Bob Thornton with his band was special guest opener for the concert. NASHVILLE, TN: HEART burst successfully on the rock music scene 25 years ago and has influenced generations of musicians and singers ever since. Led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, Heart continues to create and perform outstanding music, as proven by their powerful performance at Music City’s Amsouth Amphitheatre on Saturday June 28th. Heart is on tour around America in support of their newly released HEART: Alive In Seattle DVD (Image Entertainment) and CD/SACD (Epic Legacy).

Nashville native, Deana Carter, and her band took a break from the Kenny Chesney/Keith Urban “Margaritas ‘n’ Senoritas” tour to open the Heart show with an hour of music. She performed songs from her debut Arista Nashville album, I’m Just a Girl, as well as many of her Top 10 hits including “Strawberry Wine,” and “We Danced Anyway.” Carter described playing on the same stage as Heart as an experience she’s wanted all her musical life.

When Ann and Nancy Wilson and the superstar players comprising Heart 2003 (including Gilby Clark of Guns’n’Roses, Mike Inez of Alice in Chains/Ozzy Osbourne, Darian Sahanaja of Wondermints/Brian Wilson, and Seattle session drummer Ben Smith) took the stage, the night became a rock fan’s delight. In mid-set, Deana Carter was invited back on stage to join the dynamic Wilson sisters in a once-in-a-career rendition of the Rolling Stones’ classic, “Wild Horses.” Their impromptu performance brought roars of approval from the crowd of more than 9,000.

Backstage after the concert, the achievements of Heart were recognized in a private presentation where Deana Carter presented a proclamation given to Heart by Nashville’s Mayor Bill Purcell. Deana read the touching proclamation out loud to family members and friends, including Wynonna Judd and Nancy’s husband, filmmaker Cameron Crowe.

The proclamation reads:

Whereas, “Heart” will perform in Nashville on June 28, 2003; and

Whereas, “Heart” was formed by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson in 1973 and continues to be an inspiration; and

Whereas, “Heart” reminds us of the vast possibilities for women with their unforgettable achievements; and

Whereas, “Heart” brings humanity to music with class, concern and beauty and where there’s heart, there’s hope.

Now, therefore I, Bill Purcell, Mayor of the Metropolitan
Government of Nashville and Davidson County, do hereby recognize “Heart”

Seattle, WA – HEART, long revered as one of America’s best rock bands, was sounding bettter than ever last weekend as they kicked off their “Alive in America 2003” concert tour at the new White River concert and cultural facility in Ann & Nancy Wilson‘s hometown area of Seattle Washington.

Before the White River show, the Wilson sisters participated in the opening day ceremonies, cutting the tape that opened the venue (built as a partnership between the Muckleshoot Indian tribe, Bill Graham Presents, and Clear Channel Entertainment) alongside Tribal Council Chairman John Daniels, Jr. Ann and Nancy presented the tribe with copies of their newly released “Alive in Seattle” DVD (Image Entertainment) and 2-CD/SACD set (Sony Legacy Super Audio), and stood at the turnstyle to accept the first ticket for the more than 10,000 music fans that attended Heart’s innaugural concert in the state of the art
facility.

The Muckleshoot Tribe has lived in the Seattle area for thousands of years, in a vast area from Puget Sound to the Cascade Mountains.

Berlin opened the night’s entertainment. Early in their set, lead singer Terri Nunn was hitting an emotional passage in “Metro,” one of the band’s biggest hits, when Ann Wilson’s pet beagle, Beagie, escaped from his handlers and strolled across the stage, to the delight of the audience. The members of Berlin were laughing as much as the fans as Beagie first went to the lip of the
stage and then continued backstage to the catering area, his original target. Cartering is a regular target for Beagie who, the night before in Post Falls Idaho, had pushed a chair up to the catering table, climbed up and ate the crew’s turkey!

But the highlight of the night came when Heart took the stage with new players Gilby Clarke (Guns’n'Roses) on guitar, Mike Inez (Alice in Chains, Ozzy) on bass, Darian Nahanaja (Brian Wilson, Wondermints) joining veteran Seattle drummer Ben Smith (Lovemongers) and the Wilson sisters to rip through an energetic and often emotional 2-hour set containing the cream of Heart’s biggest hits, some landmark covers that are also featured on the “Alive in Seattle” CD and DVDs (“Black Dog,”, “Battle of Evermore,” “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters,” The Witch”), and four brand new songs (“Move On,” “Love You,” Lost Angel,” and
“Perfect Goodbye”) which will become part of Heart’s new studio album when the group goes into the studio in September. They also performed Harry Nilsson’s “Lifeline” from The Point.

The night before (6/13) HEART played their first show of the tour in Post Falls Idaho where a raging hail and rainstorm turned the stage into a swamp. True to the entertainment tradition, and to the delight of the soggy fans, the show did go on without a hitch.

Ann & Nancy Wilson of HEART took time out from rehearsing for their “Alive In America” tour in Las Vegas, to jump on stage Sunday night (6/8) with Pearl Jam at the MGM Grand and jammed on the encore; Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World.” Nancy was on guitar and Ann performed back up vocals for Eddie Vedder. This was the last song of the night, and the audience went wild and didn’t want the musicians to leave the stage, so the venue even turned on all the house lights so the band and the crowd could all rock out together. And they rocked so hard, both Nancy and Eddie each took a turn falling on their butts during the excitement.

Heart will start their own “Alive In America” tour on June 14th to support their new Alive In Seattle DVD (in the stores now) and Alive In Seattle CD, a Super Audio hybrid, to be released on June 10th. Also on Tuesday, HEART will perform “Magic Man” on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” Originally they were going to perform “Crazy on You” on Leno, but Ann and Nancy were so enthusiastic about what their new band does with “Magic Man,” they made the last minute switch. (NASDAQ: DISK), the distribution powerhouse long recognized as the market leader in music video long form DVDs. The concert will debut on PBS Television beginning in June.

At the SACD’s core is the Direct Stream Digital (DSD) method. Though developed 20 years ago, ushering in the compact disc audio revolution, new DSD technology now makes it possible to create or preserve “atmosphere” in the recording process, bringing not just the concert, but also the concert hall to the listener. The multi-channel SACD system records various sound factors surrounding the listener, including echo and reverberation, each which is reproduced independently via multiple speakers. Musical instruments are three-dimensionally located in the sound field to realize affluent and profound sound so that the space of the concert hall can be felt.

There are five enabling technologies behind the SACD, including DSD source coding technology for superior sound, stereo and multi-channel on one disc, using Digital Stream Transfer (DST) technology, secure technologies for content protection, various Super Audio CD disc types, and production system. DSD eliminates decimation and interpolation in existing processes with a new way of capturing the audio signal digitally. Where conventional systems immediately decimate the 1-bit signal into a Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) code, DSD records the 1-bit pulses directly, eliminating filters. In addition, digital-to-analog conversion can be attained by running the pulse train through an analog low-pass filter.

DSD captures the complete information of the best analog systems. For instance, a 30ips half-inch analog recorder can capture frequencies past 50kHz. DSD can represent this with a frequency response from DC to 100 kHz. To cover the dynamic range of a good analog mixing console, the residual noise power was held at -120 dB through the audio band.

Along with concert hall ambience, the SACD offers other applications. DST loss-less coding can store 70-80 minutes of stereo and multi-channel DSD content on a disc. Separate data areas are provided for stereo and multi-channel content, giving artists the flexibility to provide two discreet mixes of the same content on a disc. An extra data area has been reserved for format expansions, so that lyrics, credits, images and other content can be included.

And for Heart, SACD and all of its possibilities makes Alive in Seattle larger than life.

They’ve sold 30 million records, rocked the charts with 21 Top 40 hits, and have played several sold-out arena tours worldwide so far. And with a two-CD package, Alive in Seattle due out on Sony’s Epic/Legacy label June 10, a performance DVD / videocassette by the same title newly released on Image Entertainment, and the Alive in Seattle concert premiering on PBS in June, things just keep getting better and better for Heart.

Rock ‘n’ roll’s lovely ladies, Ann and Nancy Wilson, the heart of Heart, are also preparing for their massive “Alive in America” tour, which hits the stage starting June 13. Keeping up with this dynamic sister act and their cache of new songs, including “Heaven,” “Sister Wild Rose” and “Break The Rock,” as well as universal favorites “Magic Man,” “Crazy On You,” “Barracuda,” “These Dreams,” and cool covers like Led Zeppelin’s “Battle of Evermore” and “Black Dog,” and Elton John’s “Mona Lisas and Madhatters” is not a feat for mere mortal musicians. To tour with Heart is to not only go with the flow, but to keep the flow going.

Hence, the band is pumping new blood, and it’s definitely rock’s blue blood, including former Ozzy Osbourne and Alice In Chains bass player Mike Inez, and Lovemongers drummer Ben Smith, both who hooked up with Heart for their 2002 “Summer of Love” tour, which culminated in the Alive in Seattle concert at the landmark Paramount Theater last August. Also packing serious heat for Alive in America are Heart’s most recent additions, ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, and Wondermints/Brian Wilson keyboardist Darian Sahanaja.

As these road dogs pack up for “Alive in America,” they’ve collected their thoughts along with their gear, and give props to the sisters Wilson.

Inez reveals, “Last summer, I was extremely saddened by the losses of Layne Stayley (my singer in Alice in Chains) and Randy Castillo (my drummer in the Ozzy Band). And to be quite honest, I don’t think that I’ve been that sad EVER. Ann and Nancy took me on the road with them right after all of this happened and surrounded me with this incredibly unique sense of healing love. I came away from last years’ aptly titled ‘Summer of Love 2002′ tour, with a sense of hope. That is their special gift that they have given me, that is mine to hold in my blistered fingers.

He continues, “I’ve always been a Heart fan, and it is such a rush for me to be standing next to a couple of first-ballot hall of famers, playin’ my bass fiddle. I’ve never met classier people, and they’ve shown me how to transcend and develop in ways that I’ve never realized. My sisters in music and life!!!!

“OK, all that being said, the truth of the matter is that they have kidnapped my Grama and they said that they won’t let her go until after this year’s ‘Alive in America Tour.’

Playing dueling guitars with Nancy, Clarke states, ” I look forward to this summer’s tour. To be performing with Ann and Nancy is quite exciting. Heart’s Dreamboat Annie was one of the first records I stole from the store when I was a young troublemaker. Ann’s vocals are still more powerful than anybody else out there. And Nancy can really make a guitar rock, whether it’s an acoustic or electric. I’m sure the shows will kill.”

Says Smith, who played with Ann and Nancy in their acoustic side project The Lovemongers, “I’m so happy to be able to join Mike Inez, Gilby Clarke and Darian Sahanaja on a musical journey performing with two of the most respected and talented people in rock and roll — Ann and Nancy Wilson.”

Sahanaja offers, “I’m completely flattered that I’m doing this tour. I’m constantly amazed at how many people, musicians and otherwise, acknowledge Heart as an inspiration. Whether it’s girls who looked up to them as role models or guys who just thought they rocked, it’s quite obvious that they’ve made an impact on our generation.”

He recalls, “I first met Ann and Nancy at Radio City Music Hall a few years back where they so graciously offered their talents at the All-Star Tribute to Brian Wilson. I was in the musical director role and was juggling an assortment of artists and music. But I must say that out of the whole roster, Ann and Nancy were the kindest, most dignified people of the lot, incredibly sincere and extremely passionate.”

No doubt this is one of the countless reasons why the band comes by its name so honestly, and why audiences can look forward to so much of it when Heart comes “Alive in America.”

“Nancy and I never really killed Heart,” explains Ann Wilson, one half of the dynamic duo and rockin’ sister act that formed the profoundly influential and tremendously popular Heart, referring to the band’s “backburner” status in the studio and on the stage in recent years.

With total sales of 30 million records, 21 Top 40 hits, and several sold-out arena tours worldwide so far, even on the backburner, the band still has had serious heat. Now they’re on fire again, and these stats are on the rise as Sony Music’s Epic/Legacy record label releases Heart’s Alive in Seattle, a two-CD live set, June 10.

The concert was recorded in Ann and Nancy Wilson’s hometown, at the landmark Paramount Theater, Aug. 8, 2002, and features an inspired mix of early Heart hits (“Magic Man,” “Crazy On You,” “Barracuda”), later smashes (“Alone,” “These Dreams”), key album tracks (“Mistral Wind,” “Love Alive”), cool covers (Led Zeppelin’s “Battle of Evermore” and “Black Dog,” Elton John’s “Mona Lisas and Madhatters” and the Sonics’ early Pacific Northwest garage gem “The Witch”), plus outstanding new songs like “Heaven,” “Sister Wild Rose” and “Break The Rock.”

The enhanced CD/SACD follows Alive in Seattle on DVD and videocassette, just released via Image Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: DISK), the distribution powerhouse long recognized as the market leader in music video long form DVDs. The concert will debut on PBS Television beginning in June.

To provide added value to the audiophile consumer, Sony has announced that the two-CD collection will also contain a high definition SACD stereo track, as well as a discreet 5.1 surround sound track. The CD will play on any standard CD player while purchasers who have an SACD player will have the benefit of the enhanced definition and surround sound tracks. Despite the additional high-resolution audio information, the double CD package will carry a standard $24.98 list price.

Heart starts their “Alive in America” tour in mid-June, just three days after the Alive in Seattle release, and will surge through the summer and fall. This major road trip follows up last year’s “Summer of Love” tour, which was, as its designation implies, a rock ‘n’ roll epiphany.

Nancy Wilson says, “It felt amazing to be Heart again. In-between then and now, I did a Nancy Wilson tour, as well as scoring music for movies, and Ann’s done her Ann Wilson tours, but there was something super sweet about being Heart again on a big rock stage and just turning it up really loud. It felt amazing.”

The band’s new blood is definitely rock’s blue blood, including former Ozzy Osbourne and Alice In Chains bass player Mike Inez, and Lovemongers drummer Ben Smith, both who hooked up with Heart for their 2002 “Summer of Love” tour, which culminated in the Alive in Seattle concert. Also among Heart’s line-up of power players are most recent additions ex-Guns N’ Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke, and Wondermints/Brian Wilson keyboardist Darian Sahanaja.

“It was really freeing playing new material,” says Ann of songs like “Heaven,” “Sister Wild Rose” and “Break The Rock,” included on Alive in Seattle, and to be spotlighted with “Alive in America.” The more time that goes by with Heart, the more the songs that weren’t Top Five just kind of fade into obscurity. Then you’re just thought of as the ‘Magic Man/Crazy On You/ Barracuda’ band. So when we can have success playing new stuff, that’s what we live for really.”

Diversification and individual achievements marked the Wilson sisters’ endeavors in the ’90s. They opened that decade with Brigade featuring “All I Want to Do Is Make Love to You,” which reached No. 2 on the charts. In the mid-’90s, Ann and Nancy formed Lovemongers, an acoustic quartet with long-time collaborator Sue Ennis and performer Frank Cox. After playing a number of sold-out shows in Seattle, Lovemongers cut Led Zeppelin’s “Battle of Evermore” for the triple platinum soundtrack from the movie Singles, directed by Nancy’s husband Cameron Crowe.

The couple’s working relationship is as successful as their personal one; they composed “I Fall Apart” for Crowe’s Vanilla Sky, and Nancy has contributed to other Crowe film soundtracks, including Say Anything and Jerry MaGuire.

While Nancy has been stretching out creatively, Ann has been slimming down beautifully. She has shed more than 70 pounds, after undergoing a Gastric Band procedure, and is now in top form to go the distance on stage and on the road as one of the most powerful and emotive voices in rock.
