Debut—Produced By Warren Huart (The Fray, James

Blunt, Daniel Powter)—In April

When Misty Gonzales moved to L.A. a few years ago to give things a go after a short time in San Diego, the multi-talented singer/songwriter received an inspirational bit of wisdom from an industry executive at a conference: “There’s one type of person who doesn’t succeed in the music business and that’s the one who gives up too soon.”

The momentum “the hippie rock queen”–as she has been described by Music Connection magazine, which chose her as one of their Top 100 artists of both 2009 and 2010–in 2011 is turning that line into exciting career prophecy. Her highly anticipated shows at Key Club on Sunset Strip February 2 and 23 doubles as a release party for her infectious 3-song EP Hummingbird, a teaser for Rock & Roll Freedom Show, her full length debut on her indie label FREEDOM CHILD ENTERTAINMENT, due in April. Her partner in the company is Tom Wilson, owner of radio and television stations across the country.

Highlighted by its first single “Freedom Child,” an emotionally moving song about postwar stress experienced by soldiers and the freedom they fight for which allows us as Americans to pursue our dreams, was produced by Grammy nominee Warren Huart, who has produced such names as The Fray, James Blunt and Daniel Powter. Misty is shooting a music video for “Freedom Child,” complete with dramatic combat scenes, out in the California desert in mid-January.

The uplifting, nurturing songs on Rock & Roll Freedom Show harken back to an era when songwriters wrote about deep, meaningful issues and being a freewheeling spirit was an asset not a curse. Misty describes her parents as hippies and was raised in Colorado on classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, and The Doobie Brothers. Inspired in part by the Beatles ‘Love’ Cirque du Soleil show at the Mirage in Las Vegas, the exciting visual stage show she has created around the collection is an extension of the contemporary flair she brings to this nostalgic vibe.

As she segues seamlessly from song to song, the singer is surrounded onstage by dynamic lighting and compelling visuals of aerialists, unicyclists, hula hoop dancers, pole dancers, a stilt walker—and you have to check it out to see what else! She sees this larger production as one that can be staged in different cities for extended runs in mid-sized theatres between regular tours just spotlighting Misty as a solo artist with her live band.

In addition to shows at the Key Club on February 2 and 23, Misty will be making her South By Southwest(SXSW) debut March 18 at Touche in Austin, Texas and will perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on March 24.

Until Misty’s growing legion of fans around the world–which she affectionately dubs her “freedom children”–can experience Misty live, they can hear her songs in a wide variety of TV shows and films, including: the award-winning documentary “Beauty 24,” California Highway Patrol’s “Every 15 Minutes” program, Nickelodeon’s hit show “Degrassi” and the feature film “Bring It On 5: Fight to the Finish.” Misty recently signed licensing contracts with MTV to feature her original songs on TV shows such as “The Hills,” “Tough Love,” “Cribs,” “Teen Cribs,” “True Life,” “My Life As Liz,” “My Super Sweet 16,” and “World of Jenks.” She also has music videos airing in the U.S., Canada and Australia and has been honored with ASCAP’s Lester Sills Songwriting Award.

“After evolving to discover my true voice as an artist,” she says, “Rock & Roll Freedom Show is my way of being honest to my roots in music and the artists that inspired me. I’m being upfront and true to myself both as a writer and vocally. Earned wisdom and living some life has given me the courage to present the real me to the world. We’re living in a time where reality TV and materialism and the ‘all about me’ mentality sets a nonsensical pace that we can’t keep up with. But strip away all that and our addiction to technology and the truth is, we’re human beings seeking the same things people were seeking back in the 70s – love for oneself, love for one another, and an awakening to the emotions of war, our country and government.

“All of that makes me realize that in essence, we’re living in a parallel age to rock and roll’s golden years, and that’s the feeling I’m communicating on the album. My final admission is “Can’t Find My Way Alone” because at the end of the day, we can’t do everything by ourselves. We do need one another. “Hummingbird” is a song dedicated to the strength and power of a mother’s love. It’s my mother’s favorite bird. “Go Getter” is about me pursuing my dream and trying to stay true to myself in a challenging industry. Rock and Roll Freedom Show is a journey through all that. It’s the learning experience of life; love and wisdom which helps us realize these deeper truths. My personal journey has had its share of struggles, with many tears and times when I slept in my car to survive, but overall it’s been a beautiful one that I am thankful for.”

While Misty’s emergence with songs that Music Connection magazine says “transports listeners to the heyday of Bill Graham’s Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco…but is not dated by any means” reflects the singer’s truest heart musically, it’s also the culmination of a journey with a lot of creative detours and unique explorations. In the years before tapping into the true voice we experience on Hummingbird and Rock and Roll Freedom Show, Misty was signed to a label as an R&B artist, performed with gospel choirs and even sang at a jazz club. She then turned to No Doubt-Pat Benatar pop/rock and played the Sunset Strip/L.A. circuit extensively—including gigs at The Viper Room, Whiskey A Go Go, The Roxy and Music Box. She also did acoustic shows at Room Five.

Misty recorded the original version of “Freedom Child” on her 2009 debut The Beauty Queen Project, whose single “I Shot The Beauty Queen” spun on over 40 college and indie radio stations, some charting in the Top 20. The Beauty Queen Project was her first release on her indie label at the time, Freedom Child Records. She has also developed curriculums and special programs for two music schools in Hollywood (The School of Pop, Golden Pieces Performing Arts School); one of her former students, Allison Iraheta, who later placed fourth on “American Idol” during its 2009 season. In addition, Misty hosts a popular college and internet radio program and online video show for Brave New Network, which focuses exclusively on indie bands.

“Those have been different steps of the journey which led me to where I am now,” Misty says. “What I love most about the songs on Hummingbird and Rock & Roll Freedom Show is that I was very honest with my writing and singing and people are really responding well to them. It’s like everything is laid bare for the world to see, there are no excuses, and I’ve given honestly from my heart on this. I’m really excited about getting out there and performing these songs and then implementing the whole visual presentation.

“All of this shows me that if you’re passionate about something, even with a ton of roadblocks in your way, your passion is a vehicle that gets you through that,” she adds. “Maybe there have been two days during my whole music career that I woke up and thought, ‘I’m not going to do this. It’s too hard.’ Then the next day, I’d get up and start in again. I guess at heart I’m just a crazy dreamer who is willing to work hard to achieve the dreams and visions I have.”

Misty’s Upcoming Full Length Debut
‘Rock & Roll Freedom Show,’ Produced
By Warren Huart (The Fray, James
Blunt, Daniel Powter)

While many artists in the digital era form independent labels to release their recordings, L.A. based singer/songwriter Misty Gonzales and her partner, Tom Wilson, Cleveland based owner of radio and television stations across the country, have higher goals for their recently formed company FREEDOM CHILD ENTERTAINMENT (FCE).

The two are currently gearing up for the release of Hummingbird, her 3-song EP that is a teaser for her full length recording Rock & Roll Freedom Show, due in April 2011. Highlighted by its first single “Freedom Child,” an emotionally moving song about post-war stress experienced by soldiers and the freedom they fight for which allows us as Americans to pursue our dreams, was produced by Grammy nominee Warren Huart, who has produced such names as The Fray, James Blunt and Daniel Powter. The songstress is shooting a music video for “Freedom Child,” complete with dramatic combat scenes, out in the California desert in mid-January.

The “hippie rock queen”–as she has been described by Music Connection magazine, which chose her as one of their Top 100 artists of both 2009 and 2010—will be performing at the Key Club on Sunset Strip February 2 and 23, which is also the official release date of Hummingbird from FREEDOM CHILD ENTERTAINMENT. The show’s live stage performance, which carries the same title as the full-length album Rock & Roll Freedom Show, is inspired, in part, by the Beatles ‘Love’ Cirque du Soleil. The singer’s exciting visual stage show created around the album collection is an extension of the contemporary flair she brings to this nostalgic vibe. As she segues seamlessly from song to song, the singer is surrounded onstage by dynamic lighting, compelling visuals, aerialists, unicyclists, hula hoop dancers, pole dancers, stilt walkers and much more. Interesting enough, the final admission of the show is “Can’t Find My Way Alone” very emblematic of the FCE partnership between Misty and Wilson. They bring different strengths to the table and lean on those differences in launching this vision. Misty often jokes that her living in PST and Tom living in EST allows FREEDOM CHILD ENTERTAINMENT to work “around-the-clock”.

“While we’re both very excited about the release of our label debut and doing more recordings in the future, we developed FREEDOM CHILD ENTERTAINMENT to reach people not only through music, but also through philanthropy,” says Misty.

Wilson adds, “Besides being an amazing music writer and performer, Misty has a passion for music, people, success and giving back. What a partner to have who is focused and fun! She’s focused on the work that has to go into achieving our goals and fun with a fabulous sense of humor and appreciation for life.”

FREEDOM CHILD ENTERTAINMENT recently teamed with Wing and a Prayer Foundation, whose mission is to rebuild and expand efforts of Bethany Baptist Christian Church and School in Jacmel, Haiti. The foundation has donated building materials, toys, and computers, plus, provided financial resources to keep the school (which has 300 children, from ages 3-14) running and to further develop its curriculum during the post-earthquake crisis period.

One of FREEDOM CHILD’s major domestic goals is building The Dream Ranch, a facility that would house a summer program bringing in kids from 12 to 16 years-old to help them learn life and workplace skills from professionals in various fields, music and otherwise. The Dream Ranch would identify the career ambitions of the young participants and invite people working successfully in those careers to help them develop plans of action to move them towards achieving those dreams. Misty and Tom have been looking for potential property for the ranch everywhere from Ocala, Florida to North Carolina.

“I met Tom a few years back at a KIIS-FM event in Los Angeles; I was promoting one of my first projects. We had an equal passion for great music and a desire to reach people through music and philanthropy,” she says. “I had just started my label, but the more we talked about the charitable side of the equation, the more we realized it would be a great idea to form FREEDOM CHILD ENTERTAINMENT as an umbrella to house all of our dreams and goals, musical and otherwise.”
