DAVIE, FLORIDA – Recently named as Goodwill Ambassadors of the Issa Trust Foundation, an organization focused on pediatric healthcare and education for children and families in Jamaica, Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock of Air Supply (www.airsupplymusic.com) traveled on February 2 to the parish of St. Mary to witness first-hand the struggles of thousands of the island nation’s children.

The duo’s ambassadorship was announced in early February by Issa Trust Foundation Chairman Paul Issa.

The veteran hit-making duo toured Annotto Bay Hospital, St. Ann’s Bay Hospital and Free Hill Primary and Infant School. Signed by Clive Davis to Arista Records in 1980, Air Supply scored an immediate hit with “Lost In Love,” an edited-down version of a previous Australian hit which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song initiated a run of seven consecutive U.S. Top Fives in just over two years, including their #1 “The One That You Love” (1981). Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles’ run of consecutive top five singles.

Air Supply’s albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits have sold in excess of 40 million copies. “Lost in Love” was named Song of the Year in 1980, and, their singles have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

Prior to that show, Theatre East will present a reading of “Devil & The Deep,” a new musical featuring music and lyrics by Russell and McGhie, with book and additional lyrics by Melissa Bell.

The show is a re-imagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic “Treasure Island.” The reading takes place Monday, November 10 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, November 11 at 1 p.m. at the Abington Theatre in NYC, located at 312 W. 36^th Street, between 8^th and 9^th Avenues.

The two met at an awards gala in 2012 and their passion for music instantly sparked a conversation. A few weeks later, McGhie met up with Russell to lend her voice to a new project he was working on. She sang background vocals on two Russell-produced Air Supply songs, “Want You” and “Desert Sea Sky.” After their first day working together, they were asked to do a show at a local pub. Their very first performance together was a hit and quickly evolved into Of Eden.

Drawing on Russell’s decades-long history as a songwriter (including Air Supply classics “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love” and “The One that You Love”) and McGhie’s background as a singer (including one self-titled EP), the two have created a new sound using only their voices and a guitar.

This past year, in addition to writing for “Devil & The Deep,” Of Eden wrote songs for various movies. Russell and McGhie are currently working on their second album and planning more tour dates.

Chianese was in the television series “East Side/West Side.” In 1974, Francis Ford Coppola cast Chianese as Johnny Ola in “The Godfather Part II.” Chianese’s other films include “Dog Day Afternoon” as the father of “Sunny” (Al Pacino), “And Justice For All,” and “Looking for Richard.” Chianese, also a musician, has appeared in many taverns and restaurants, singing and playing guitar.

The Theatre East Laurette Taylor Award was founded in 2009 to celebrate the exceptional artistic contributions of Laurette Taylor (“The Glass Menagerie”) and to celebrate those that have made similar contributions. Chianese has appeared in several Theatre East productions and readings.

The Wideboys have worked their studio magic for scores superstar artists since 2000, including Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, Enrique Iglesias, Taio Cruz featuring Kylie Minogue, Beyonce, Emili Sande, Miley Cyrus, Pussycat Dolls, Nelly Furtado, Usher, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and Robin Thicke.

“Desert Sea Sky,” released on the Air Supply Music label, is being worked to the club market, DJs and dance radio by Brad LeBeau, founder of ProMotion, one of the most successful promo companies in the dance/EDM (electronic dance music) genre.

LeBeau says, “Seldom in my marketing firm’s 30 year history, has an über-popular act been able to sustain themselves for three decades, let alone re-invent their sound. Such is case, however, with Australian music icons Air Supply, whose latest single, ‘Desert, Sea, Sky’ – remixed by U.K. production team, The Wideboys – makes them as relevant amongst today’s EDM movement as their legendary ballads were in the 1980′s. “This is a whole new genre for us, and when we play it as the encore in our live shows, we can see the look on everyone’s faces, like, ‘wow, this is different,” says Russell. “But at the same time they’re moving and really digging the groove, which is a lovely thing to see. We have all the ballads and melodies in songs we became famous for, but now we’re blending those with a whole other vibe. ‘Desert Sea Sky’ is exciting because it’s creating a new pathway for us. Someone I talked to recently compared us to a massive tree with roots deep in the ground – and now there’s another branch coming out of the trunk!”

His partner Russell Hitchcock adds, “It’s not what you’d expect from Air Supply, but why not? We’ve got nothing to prove, but don’t want to rest on our laurels, either.”

When Air Supply is on tour internationally, Russell has a well known habit of visiting dance clubs and checking out new sounds. He wrote “Desert Sea Sky” during a tour stop in Israel, walking along a beach in Tel Aviv. “I started to think about Moses, and thought that during this troubling time in history, with all the turmoil in the world, people could use a leader to rise up to grab their attention and give them hope. When I started to write the song, I thought about the things that would inspire that leader to in turn inspire his people. They would be in the desert, want to get to the sea and they will follow the sky to find it.”

The duo began to play the song live, and while they thought it sounded great and their fans loved it, they also felt it could use a “pulsier” groove. They met a remixer in Israel named Oren Gilat who created an original dance mix that eventually found its way to LeBeau, who immediately heard its potential and contacted The Wideboys to create a series of new mixes.

“When they sent their versions back to us, everyone was freaking out,” Russell says. “It’s the first time we had done something like this and the transformation of our sound has been amazing. As a songwriter, I feel like I am learning something completely new.”

The release of “Desert Sea Sky” coincides beautifully with a great milestone in the career of Air Supply. Over 38 years after meeting in Sydney as performers in a local production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” the duo recently returned to the city and was inducted into the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Hall of Fame at the 27^th Annual ARIA Awards on December 1 at The Star Event Centre.

“It is a great honour for us,” says Hitchcock, and it was something that was totally unexpected. We are certainly excited to come home to Australia and to have fun with everybody and we want to say thank you to all who participated in our ARIA Hall Of Fame induction. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

“In the beginning,” he adds, “we said they probably thought we were going to be a one-hit wonder. Then, we were a two-hit wonder, then a seven-hit wonder, and then a 10-hit wonder…Here we are, all these years later, loving what we do just as much as when we began.”

Graham Russell commented, “The Aria Hall of Fame induction has come at the perfect time for Air Supply. We have never sought recognition, we let our music speak for itself, but it is a nice salute to our 38 years as a successful band.”

As popular as their recordings have been, it is Air Supply’s live shows that have held audiences captive around the world for decades. Russell and Hitchcock, who continue to play more than 150 shows a year worldwide, were the first Western group to tour China, Taiwan, and countless other countries that before would not allow pop music across their borders.

After numerous U.S. dates throughout November, Air Supply is performing throughout Australia and New Zealand in conjunction with their visit to the ARIA Awards for their induction. They are doing shows on the Gold Coast (Jupiters 11/27), in Sydney (State Theatre 11/29), Christchurch (CBS Arena 12/3), Wellington (St. James Theatre 12/4), Auckland (Civic Theatre 12/5), Melbourne (Palais Theatre 12/7) and Perth (Concert Hall 12/8). Hitchcock adds, “I’m doing something right, within the band at least. People ask ‘When did this tour begin?’ and we always say ’1975.’ We haven’t had a year off the road since we began working together. Graham and I have never had a fight in 38 years.”
