NEW YORK, N.Y. - Graham Russell, one half of the legendary pop hit-making duo Air Supply (www.airsupplymusic.com), is hosting a special “Airheads Fan Day” to celebrate “Devil and the Deep,” a fresh, bold new musical reimagining of “Treasure Island” he co-wrote with Katie McGhie (music and lyrics) and Melissa Bell (book and additional lyrics).

On Sunday, June 14, after the 3 p.m. performance of the show, Russell will host a special reception for fans that includes a meet and greet with him and McGhie, who also perform collectively as the duo Of Eden.

Produced by Theatre East, the world premiere of “Devil and the Deep” is June 11 (Graham Russell’s birthday) at Theater 3, located at 311 W43rd St. 3rd Floor, NYC. Lisa Devine will direct. After its initial run June 11-27, the producers will seek a larger venue for a longer run. Previews begin June 6.

The show is being billed as a presentation designed “for families and anyone who’s ever dreamed of sailing away to adventure!”

Set in the mid-18th century, the musical follows Jim Hawkins from poverty-stricken Bristol, England, all the way to Caribbean Islands as he embarks on a journey that will change his life forever. A boy who dreamed of adventure will be faced with lurking danger, betrayal, and grave choices. The show examines the parallel desires of Jim and the infamous Long John Silver and the paths they choose to take.

Theatre East began talks with Bell about this ambitious project in early 2013. Bell asked Russell to contribute a few songs and, as Russell says, “it started to open up into something much larger.”

“The challenge,” he adds, “was to write not just great songs but ones that people will be singing years from now. I’m really proud of the work we did and believe that these tunes would stand on their own merit even if they were not an integral part of telling this great story.”

Russell and his Air Supply partner Russell Hitchcock, are currently celebrating the band’s 40th Anniversary with another busy year of global touring that includes dates throughout the U.S., Canada and the rest of the world.

Russell, a recent inductee into the Australian Music (ARIA) Hall of Fame, wrote the first song for the musical, the sweeping “Sail Away,” himself and the other pieces with Katie McGhie, his partner in the popular acoustic duo Of Eden. The book for “Devil and The Deep” was written by Melissa Bell, whose plays and librettos have been presented at Theatre East, the Triad Theatre, The Snapple Theatre, the Abingdon Theatre and TheatreLab in New York City.

Theatre East will be producing the highly-anticipated musical adaptation, which is scheduled for its world premiere in June 11, 2015 (Russell’s birthday) at Theater 3 on 43rd Street and 8th Avenue in NYC. Lisa Devine will direct. After its initial run, the producers will be seeking a larger venue for a longer run.

Set in the mid-18th century, the musical follows Jim Hawkins from poverty-stricken Bristol, England, all the way to Caribbean Islands as he embarks on a journey that will change his life forever. A boy who dreamed of adventure will be faced with lurking danger, betrayal, and grave choices that will, in turn, lead him to manhood. The show examines the parallel desires of Jim and the infamous Long John Silver and the paths they choose to take as they discover the true meaning of treasure.

Theatre East began talks with playwright Melissa Bell about this ambitious project in early 2013 as a straight play adaptation. Bell then asked Russell to contribute a few songs and, as Russell says, “it started to open up into something much larger.” After he penned “Sail Away,” a song that finds Jim fantasizing about life at sea, he invited McGhie to co-write “Be Who You Must Be” and “Gentlemen of Fortune.” The presentation was subsequently re-conceptualized as a full blown musical.

“Every time I spoke to Melissa, she loved the songs so much that she thought it was only natural that we open it up more and incorporate more and more music,” says Russell, who is concurrently engaged in a full slate of domestic and international touring with Air Supply throughout 2015 and beyond. “She appreciated the way Katie and I saw the characters as slightly different people than she saw them. So we got busy writing other songs. Katie likewise brought a fresh, distinctively female perspective to the characters that might have never occurred to me.

“The challenge,” he adds, “was to write not just good songs but great ones, because you can’t fill a musical of this caliber with anything less than hits that are cool and memorable, not only onstage, but that people will be singing years from now. I am really proud of the work we did and believe that these tunes would stand on their own merit even if they were not an integral part of telling this great story.”

DAVIE, FLORIDA – Recently named as Goodwill Ambassadors of the Issa Trust Foundation, an organization focused on pediatric healthcare and education for children and families in Jamaica, Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock of Air Supply (www.airsupplymusic.com) traveled on February 2 to the parish of St. Mary to witness first-hand the struggles of thousands of the island nation’s children.

The duo’s ambassadorship was announced in early February by Issa Trust Foundation Chairman Paul Issa.

The veteran hit-making duo toured Annotto Bay Hospital, St. Ann’s Bay Hospital and Free Hill Primary and Infant School. Diane Pollard, President and CEO of the Issa Trust Foundation, says, “Their award winning song ‘All Out of Love’ has a new meaning for us now. Air Supply performs 130 concerts a year and it’s wonderful that they still have time to show their love for our future, the children.”

Graham Russell said of his experience, “Sharing a day with the children of Jamaica at school and in the Hospitals was one of the most beautiful and touching days I have ever spent. It reminds us that we are all one people and we must share our resources with those far less fortunate and in great need. This is the real world, and we are all a part of it. We all need each other.”

This year, Air Supply celebrates their 40th Anniversary as a musical duo while looking forward to another whirlwind slate of international appearances with one of pop music’s most enduring powerhouse touring bands.

Their most recent release, the CD, DVD and Blu-Ray Live in Hong Kong on Evolution Media, captures one of their classic performances, vibrantly illuminating a true musical phenomenon. Throughout 2015, Air Supply will perform another 100+ dates throughout North America and across the world, hitting Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, The Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, Jamaica and Chile. Also to come is the release of a new dance single, “I Want You.”

The Issa Trust Foundation a 501(c)(3) nonprofit was established in 2005 by Couples Resorts. The mission of the Foundation is to provide a system of prevention, health promotion and education, community health improvement and other services to promote well-being and development for the people of Jamaica.
INTERNATIONAL TOURING THROUGHOUT 2015

Shortly after Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met the first day of rehearsal as chorus members in a Sydney, Australia production of “Jesus Christ Superstar” in May 1975, they realized that they had many things in common including having seen The Beatles perform in concert in 1964.

Forty years later, the duo – which attained worldwide fame as pop/rock duo Air Supply (www.airsupplymusic.com) with hit after hit in the early to mid-‘80s – celebrates their special anniversary while looking forward to another whirlwind slate of international appearances with one of pop music’s most enduring powerhouse touring bands.

Signed by Clive Davis to Arista Records in 1980, Air Supply scored an immediate hit with “Lost In Love,” an edited-down version of a previous Australian hit which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song initiated a run of seven consecutive U.S. Top Fives in just over two years, including their #1 “The One That You Love” (1981). Air Supply at that time had equaled The Beatles’ run of consecutive top five singles.

Air Supply’s albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits have sold in excess of 40 million copies. “Lost in Love” was named Song of the Year in 1980, and, their singles have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

With the chart success in recent years of “Dance With Me” and “Faith In Love” (from their 2010 album Mumbo Jumbo), which reached the Top 30 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, and “Desert Sea Sky,” whose remix by The Wideboys hit the Hot Dance Club Play chart, Air Supply has extended their hit-making streak to four decades.

Collectively known as Of Eden, the duo is set to perform at Regatta Bar in Cambridge, Mass., November 20 at 8 p.m. They will be performing songs from their 2013 full-length album Feel. Tickets can be purchased here: http://www.getshowtix.com/regattabar/moreinfo.cgi?id=3291

Prior to that show, Theatre East will present a reading of “Devil & The Deep,” a new musical featuring music and lyrics by Russell and McGhie, with book and additional lyrics by Melissa Bell.

The show is a re-imagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic “Treasure Island.” The reading takes place Monday, November 10 at 7 p.m. and Tuesday, November 11 at 1 p.m. at the Abington Theatre in NYC, located at 312 W. 36th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues.

The two met at an awards gala in 2012 and their passion for music instantly sparked a conversation. A few weeks later, McGhie met up with Russell to lend her voice to a new project he was working on. She sang background vocals on two Russell-produced Air Supply songs, “Want You” and “Desert Sea Sky.” After their first day working together, they were asked to do a show at a local pub. Their very first performance together was a hit and quickly evolved into Of Eden.

Drawing on Russell’s decades-long history as a songwriter (including Air Supply classics “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love” and “The One that You Love”) and McGhie’s background as a singer (including one self-titled EP), the two have created a new sound using only their voices and a guitar.

This past year, in addition to writing for “Devil & The Deep,” Of Eden wrote songs for various movies. Russell and McGhie are currently working on their second album and planning more tour dates.

Industry Association) Hall of Fame at the 27th Annual
ARIA Awards, December 1 in Sydney

Hey Air Supply fans – fasten your seat belts and get onto the floor!

Still a global sensation performing for audiences across the U.S. and throughout the world every year, the famed hitmaking duo (www.airsupplymusic.com) is hotter and more creative than ever as they groove into the dance/club world for the first time with their infectious new single “Desert Sea Sky.”

Penned by the duo’s Graham Russell, the track has received the royal studio treatment by famed UK remix wizards The Wideboys, who have created multiple remixes for promotion across the board to Billboard dance club DJs, clubs, radio stations and the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.

The Wideboys have worked their studio magic for scores superstar artists since 2000, including Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, Enrique Iglesias, Taio Cruz featuring Kylie Minogue, Beyonce, Emili Sande, Miley Cyrus, Pussycat Dolls, Nelly Furtado, Usher, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Maroon 5 and Robin Thicke.

“Desert Sea Sky,” released on the Air Supply Music label, is being worked to the club market, DJs and dance radio by Brad LeBeau, founder of ProMotion, one of the most successful promo companies in the dance/EDM (electronic dance music) genre.

LeBeau says, “Seldom in my marketing firm’s 30 year history, has an über-popular act been able to sustain themselves for three decades, let alone re-invent their sound. Such is case, however, with Australian music icons Air Supply, whose latest single, ‘Desert, Sea, Sky’ – remixed by U.K. production team, The Wideboys – makes them as relevant amongst today’s EDM movement as their legendary ballads were in the 1980′s. Well done, gentlemen. Well done.”

“This is a whole new genre for us, and when we play it as the encore in our live shows, we can see the look on everyone’s faces, like, ‘wow, this is different,” says Russell. “But at the same time they’re moving and really digging the groove, which is a lovely thing to see. We have all the ballads and melodies in songs we became famous for, but now we’re blending those with a whole other vibe. ‘Desert Sea Sky’ is exciting because it’s creating a new pathway for us. Someone I talked to recently compared us to a massive tree with roots deep in the ground – and now there’s another branch coming out of the trunk!”

His partner Russell Hitchcock adds, “It’s not what you’d expect from Air Supply, but why not? We’ve got nothing to prove, but don’t want to rest on our laurels, either.”

When Air Supply is on tour internationally, Russell has a well known habit of visiting dance clubs and checking out new sounds. He wrote “Desert Sea Sky” during a tour stop in Israel, walking along a beach in Tel Aviv. “I started to think about Moses, and thought that during this troubling time in history, with all the turmoil in the world, people could use a leader to rise up to grab their attention and give them hope. When I started to write the song, I thought about the things that would inspire that leader to in turn inspire his people. They would be in the desert, want to get to the sea and they will follow the sky to find it.”

The duo began to play the song live, and while they thought it sounded great and their fans loved it, they also felt it could use a “pulsier” groove. They met a remixer in Israel named Oren Gilat who created an original dance mix that eventually found its way to LeBeau, who immediately heard its potential and contacted The Wideboys to create a series of new mixes.

“When they sent their versions back to us, everyone was freaking out,” Russell says. “It’s the first time we had done something like this and the transformation of our sound has been amazing. As a songwriter, I feel like I am learning something completely new.”

The release of “Desert Sea Sky” coincides beautifully with a great milestone in the career of Air Supply. Over 38 years after meeting in Sydney as performers in a local production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” the duo recently returned to the city and was inducted into the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Hall of Fame at the 27th Annual ARIA Awards on December 1 at The Star Event Centre.

Russell and Hitchcock are also looking forward to the world premiere of the highly anticipated musical “All Out Of Love,” set to be staged in Perth and then Singapore in 2014. “All Out of Love” features the classic songs of Air Supply and an original script skillfully woven into a new love story by award winning Canadian playwright Jim Millan. It is produced by Musical Management Asia Pacific MMAP, headed by Naomi Toohey and Dale Harrison. Harrison says, “Air Supply were the first Western group to tour China, Taiwan, and countless other countries. With the World Premiere in Singapore in 2014, ‘All Out of Love’ will continue the tradition of breaking new ground.”

BREAKTHROUGH HIT ‘LOST IN LOVE,’ AIR SUPPLY IS SET TO BE INDUCTED
INTO THE AUSTRALIAN RECORDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION (ARIA) HALL OF
FAME ON DECEMBER 1 IN SYDNEY

LOS ANGELES- Over 38 years after meeting in Sydney as performers in a local production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock—known throughout the world as the hit making duo Air Supply (www.airsupplymusic.com)—return to the city to be inducted into the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Hall of Fame at the 27th Annual ARIA Awards, set for Sunday, December 1 at The Star Event Centre.

“It is a great honour for us,” says Hitchcock, and it was something that was totally unexpected. We are certainly excited to come home to Australia and to have fun with everybody and we want to say thank you to all who participated in our ARIA Hall Of Fame induction. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

“In the beginning,” he adds, “we said they probably thought we were going to be a one-hit wonder. Then, we were a two-hit wonder, then a seven-hit wonder, and then a 10-hit wonder…Here we are, all these years later, loving what we do just as much as when we began.”

Graham Russell commented, “The Aria Hall of Fame induction has come at the perfect time for Air Supply. We have never sought recognition, we let our music speak for itself, but it is a nice salute to our 38 years as a successful band.”

Denis Handlin AM, ARIA Chairman & CEO of Sony Music Entertainment Australia & New Zealand and President, Asia, said, “On behalf of the ARIA Board we are honoured to induct Air Supply into the ARIA Hall of Fame on Sunday 1 December at the 27th Annual ARIA Awards. With their many timeless songs that have crossed generations and led to ground-breaking success overseas, Air Supply is one of Australia’s most unique and successful musical stories.”

Jim Gosnell, President of APA commented, “Graham and Russell’s melodies have taught me time and again that great love songs are universal and never go out of style. It is beyond a pleasure and an honour to have worked with such gifted talents over the last two decades, and for that I am truly grateful.”

Signed by Clive Davis to Arista Records in 1980, Air Supply—who launched their career as an acoustic duo playing pizza parlours, night clubs and coffee bars in Sydney several years earlier—scored an immediate hit with “Lost In Love,” which reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song initiated a run of seven consecutive US Top Fives in a little more than two years, including their #1 “The One That You Love” in 1981. Air Supply at that time had equalled The Beatles‘ run of consecutive top five singles.

Air Supply’s albums Lost in Love, The One That You Love, Now & Forever, and The Greatest Hits have sold in excess of 40 million copies. “Lost in Love” was named Song of the Year in 1980, and, their singles have sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. “Lost in Love,” “All Out of Love,” “The One That You Love,” “Sweet Dreams,” and “Making Love Out Of Nothing At All” have each achieved multi-million plays on the radio.

Previous ARIA Hall of Fame inductees include Kylie Minogue, Men At Work, The Seekers, The Bee Gees, INXS, Olivia Newton-John, Little River Band, Divinyls, Helen Reddy, Midnight Oil and Nick Cave.

In 1988, Air Supply was asked to participate in Australia’s bicentennial celebration and to play for HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Diana, where they learned both were already ardent fans. This engagement would be one of their most treasured moments in their career.

As popular as their recordings have been, it is Air Supply’s live shows that have held audiences captive around the world for decades. Russell and Hitchcock, who continue to play more than 150 shows a year worldwide, were the first Western group to tour China, Taiwan, and countless other countries that before would not allow pop music across their borders.

After numerous U.S. dates throughout November, Air Supply is performing throughout Australia and New Zealand in conjunction with their visit to the ARIA Awards for their induction. They are doing shows on the Gold Coast (Jupiters 11/27), in Sydney (State Theatre 11/29), Christchurch (CBS Arena 12/3), Wellington (St. James Theatre 12/4), Auckland (Civic Theatre 12/5), Melbourne (Palais Theatre 12/7) and Perth (Concert Hall 12/8). They return to North American for numerous late winter and spring dates in North America.

Hitchcock adds, “I’m doing something right, within the band at least. People ask ‘When did this tour begin?’ and we always say ’1975.’ We haven’t had a year off the road since we began working together. Graham and I have never had a fight in 38 years.”

The duo is currently working on a new dance single and album, set for release in 2014.

Russell and Hitchcock are also looking forward to the world premiere of the highly-anticipated musical “All Out Of Love,” set to be staged in Perth and then Singapore in 2014.
