Starfleet Indie Music Charts With Their Infectious,
Provocative First Single ‘F.U.N’

Virginia-based hip-hop/funk group CSJQ (Clayton Savage and JayQuan) is preparing the world for their new single, “The Life”—the title track from their recently released debut EP. On October 8, the band will begin filming the accompanying music video, which will be directed by El Bravador filmworks.

CSJQ recently exploded onto the underground hip-hop scene with their infectious and provocative first single, “F.U.N.,” a bass-driven funk throwback that conveys their attitude that they’re here to stay, not going to take any s*** and have zero tolerance for so-called friend that talk behind their backs.

“F.U.N” has also struck a chord with radio audiences, who have taken notice of their sound—which CSJQ refers to as “Grown People’s Hip-Hop.” The group’s first single is currently climbing Starfleet Music‘s Hip-Hop chart, resting at # 10, while peaking at #3 on the Indie chart.

“[CSJQ] is holding their own against the majors,” said Ronnie Matthews, owner of Starfleet Music Pool.

On September 29, Sylvia Robinson, producer of hip-hop classics “Rapper’s Delight,” and “The Message,” died of congestive heart failure—Robinson gave Savage his first home in the recording industry. He said of her passing:

“Mrs. Robinson was classy, talented, beautiful and intuitive to the point of prophetic. Without her guile and intuitive nature, her willingness to accept, nurture and acknowledge talent regardless of the neighborhood from which it sprang, the music would have taken a lot longer to catch on and never have produced the classics that laid the foundation for the world-wide acceptance of what we now call hip-hop. She is to hip-hop what Berry Gordy is to Motown.”

JayQuan, the other half of CSJQ, said: “Sylvia Robinson’s efforts literally changed my life. I am proud to say that I own every recording on the Sugar Hill label. She is truly missed.”

CSJQ recently signed a major deal with Veal-Steen Music Publishing to license their entire music catalogue for upcoming multi-media projects. The licensing deal encompasses film, television, video games, commercials and DVDs.
